The Future
Norton Park Training & Conference Centre
Adjacent to Norton Park are the Lockhart church buildings, which have been vacant since 1987 and will be integrated and redeveloped as an extension to Norton Park. The church hall (St Mungos’) was built in the late 1890’s, in conjunction with Norton Park, with the addition of the Lockhart Church built nearly a quarter of a century later in 1925. The building originally belonged to the Church of Scotland and had a congregation until 1987 when it dissolved.
Our goal is “To create the opportunity for voluntary sector organisations across Scotland to access state of the art affordable facilities”
We will achieve our aim by:
- Refurbishing the former Lockhart church to create a 120-seater fully equipped conference and training centre
- Demolishing the St Mungo Hall and establishing a new office build
- Construction of a new common entrance to the enhanced facility together with additional car parking
Formal planning permission has now been granted by the City of Edinburgh Planning Committee (see plans, below). This will allow the provision of a dedicated, affordable and fully accessible facility for conference and training events (including an auditorium), a coffee shop, fully equipped meeting and training rooms and approximately 15,000 square feet of flexible, fully accessible quality office accommodation for voluntary sector organisations.
Converting the former Lockhart church into conference facilities and shared office accommodation is a mammoth task and will cost in the region of £6 million. The potential benefits to the community of conversion are huge!
